The Kentucky State Senate passed SB 112 February 26 and was recently signed into law by Gov. Matt Bevin; this bill will allow doctors anywhere in the world to see patients in Kentucky, as long as the doctor is licensed in Kentucky.
This bill was designed to encourage adoption of telehealth technologies, particularly for Medicaid patients, as telehealth is often a more efficient option. Sen. Ralph Alvarado (R-Winchester) says that a telemedicine option available to state employees has already saved $2.5 million. Telehealth also allows patients in remote areas to have access to specialized care.
The law states that health plans can not require providers to be present in person with patients or demand proof that telehealth consultations are necessary.
